Together We Can Conference

Register to attend the 2016 Together We Can Conference in Des Moines on Saturday, May 7 at the Varied Industries Conference Center on the Iowa State Fairgrounds! Presented in partnership with 14 community partner organizations, this  one of a kind, statewide conference is tailored to individuals with disabilities, their families, and the people who serve them. The conference is FREE for families and individuals with disabilities, and $25.00 for professionals, and offers onsite childcare, access
to a wide variety of exhibitors, and education and training credits for foster parents, social workers, and attorneys.This year’s conference keynote speaker is Dakota Johns, a multi
talented young adult with Down Syndrome who doesn’t allow his disability to get in the way of his dreams. Dakota is a self advocate, business owner, public speaker, ambassador, and college student, and his goal is to empower others to live a meaningful and complete life just like he does. The Together We Can Conference provides access to cutting
edge resources and information from family leaders and experts in the areas of

Building Better Boards

Please join us for a free training session to build non-profit boards that better represent our diverse community. This series of educational sessions seeks to empower, educate and connect members of underrepresented populations for service on non-profit boards.

This event is for you if:
• You currently serve or aspire to serve on a non-profit board
• You lead or serve a non-profit board and want to include more diverse perspectives in your organization’s leadership
If you attend you will:
• Receive training on effective board service
• Learn from experienced board members about their experience being a minority perspective on a board
• Network to connect aspiring community leaders from underrepresented populations with groups serving the Greater Des Moines community

BENEFITS PLANNING TRAINING

Disability Rights Iowa Is excited to announce a one-day  (6 hours)  dynamic training that will give you valuable information about how to better answer questions for your customers/consumer receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). As well as provide an overview of the various other resources such as ABLEaccounts, IDA(Individual Development Accounts), PASS Plans, and more! DRI will facilitate an interactive discussion of the work incentives and how to apply them. Disability Rights Iowa (DRI) will also present information on its focus areas such as; the PABSS (Protection and Advocacy for Beneficiaries of Social Security) grant, and other services offered by DRI.

Agencies can also request a customized training for their personnel only at their company site (minimum ten attendees).

Fair Housing Training – Disability, Dogs, and Doors

Fair Housing Training, “Disability, Dogs, and Doors,” will be held in Sioux City on April 7 and in Cedar Rapids on April 28, 2017.

 

Come in the morning to hear about “Build It Right IOWA” and learn about the design and construction accessibility requirements for multifamily housing complexes. Then stay in the afternoon to hear about assistance animals and learn more about the duty of housing providers to provide reasonable accommodation for persons with disabilities.

 

The training is free and open to the public. Register early so you can be one of the 60 participants who will be guaranteed a seat, snacks, and presentation materials!
