Staff Attorney
Scott Lyon has been an attorney at DRI since 2012. Scott’s work includes representing adult protected persons in guardianship and conservatorship cases, providing training on substitute decision-making, and representing individuals who receive Medicaid waiver services in administrative hearings to challenge service cuts. Prior to college and law school at the University of Iowa, Scott served four years on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in California, Washington, and Iraq. The most rewarding part of working at DRI for Scott is helping clients navigate the sometimes complicated processes that can be barriers to enforcing their rights, and getting good results when pitted against established institutions. In the office, Scott keeps a quote from one of his clinical law professors taped to his desk as a reminder during difficult cases: “If you are doing your job well, you are bound to offend someone in power.” Outside of work, Scott is an avid cyclist when Iowa weather permits, and an amateur woodworker when it doesn’t. He lives in West Des Moines with his wife and two kids.
