How We Help

Disability Rights Iowa equips Iowans with the knowledge, advocacy, representation, and assistance they need to defend their rights. Our services are free to adults and children with a wide range of disabilities and mental illnesses. DRI aims to break down the barriers that keep Iowans with disabilities from experiencing equality in everyday life.

Self-Advocacy

Empowerment and education are key to self-advocacy. Our team provides you with educational tools, empowerment tactics, and legal advice so that you can defend your rights with confidence.

Systemic Advocacy

DRI is active in many systemic projects that advocate for the rights of large groups of people. We use our legal power, expertise, and ambition to make real change for Iowans affected by systemic discrimination.

Individual Representation

When cases require individual representation, DRI exhausts all administrative remedies and pursue legal action if necessary. Our diligent team of representatives prioritize resolving your issues and protecting the individual rights of people with disabilities or mental illness.

Benefits Planning

We assist individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) with benefits planning and securing gainful employment. Make informed decisions about your future with the help of our skilled Community Work Incentives Coordinators.

How to Get Help

If you are dealing with a disability-related issue, follow these simple steps to get help from DRI.

Review the parameters of qualifying for services. Before filling out your intake form, it is important to review your eligibility for our services. Due to our limited funding, DRI has to strictly limit our services to individuals with issues that fall within our areas of focus.

Fill out the intake form.Fill out our quick and easy-to-use intake form online by following the prompted steps and completing all the necessary fields.

Receive a response from DRI within 3–5 business days.After receiving your intake form, our intake team of attorneys and advocates will need 3–5 business days to review your form and prepare a response before contacting you.

Our intake specialists will walk you through the next steps in your process, depending on your eligibility for services. If your needs are not within our areas of focus, we will provide you with information and a referral to an agency that can help.
