IOWA – Disability Rights Iowa (DRI) is honored to announce that it has been awarded a grant of $25,000 from Principal® Foundation. The grant will provide DRI with additional resources to continue implementing its Strategic Plan which focuses DRI’s advocacy on the most significant disability-rights issues to Iowans with disabilities.
DRI initially sought Principal Foundation funds to grow its capacity to provide additional impactful disability rights advocacy and resources to all Iowans with disabilities. A statewide nonprofit, DRI is not only charged with serving all Iowans with disabilities but offers services including self-advocacy resources, individual legal and systems advocacy, referrals, technical assistance, outreach, training, and monitoring of facilities.
“DRI works to address and remove disability rights barriers encountered by Iowans with disabilities. Through this work, DRI is Creating Change for Iowans with disabilities.” Catherine Johnson, Executive Director of DRI begins. “By awarding DRI this generous grant, Principal Foundation has emphasized the importance of expanding our advocacy to even more Iowans with disabilities.”
DRI’s mission is Advocating for justice. Advancing human and legal rights. Protecting Iowans with disabilities. DRI strives to achieve its mission by empowering Iowans with disabilities and by ensuring their rights of equality, opportunity, and independence. The intent of DRI’s advocacy is focused on creating maximum change for the maximum number of Iowans with disabilities. 12.5% of Iowans (393,816 individuals), identify as having a disability. DRI works to accomplish its mission through identifying and removing systemic barriers which prevent individuals with disabilities from achieving full access, equality, independence, and inclusion.
“Disability Rights Iowa provides critical legal assistance to Iowa’s disability community,” says Jo Christine Miles, director, Principal Foundation, and Community Relations. “At Principal Foundation, we are committed to providing financial resources and tools to underrepresented populations, such as the disability community, to help them build better and brighter futures.”
