What is assistive technology?
Assistive technology or “AT” is a tool or piece of equipment that allows a person with a disability to do things for themselves they otherwise wouldn’t be able to do.
What are some examples of assistive technology?
AT can be relatively low-tech like a communication board or specialized pencil grips. AT can also be very high-tech like screen-reading software for individuals with vision disabilities, power-wheelchairs for those with mobility disabilities, or speech generating devices for those who can’t verbally talk.
I need assistive technology. Who pays for it?
- It depends on what type of AT you need and where and how you plan to use it.
- Some AT will be covered by your health insurance. This is true even if you receive your health insurance through Medicaid.
- If you need the AT to do your job, you may be able to obtain it through the reasonable accommodation process with your employer.
- If your child needs AT in order to fully participate in school, you may be able to obtain the AT through special education services.
